Peter Henlein's pocket watch, or how time learned to travel
In the autumn of 1504, a Nuremberg locksmith named Peter Henlein got into a brawl that killed a man. The dead man was Georg Glaser, also a locksmith. Henlein, fearing a murder charge, fled to the Franciscan monastery on the edge of the city and asked for sanctuary — which the friars granted. He would stay for four years. When he emerged in 1508, he was a master craftsman, and he brought something out of the cloister that nobody had managed before: a clock you could put in your pocket.
Henlein had been born around 1485 in Nuremberg, the metalworking capital of the Holy Roman Empire. The city’s smiths were famous for their precision work in iron and brass — locks, armor, scientific instruments — and its guilds ran a tight ship. Locksmiths, in particular, had the fine-motor skills and metallurgical vocabulary to build small machines, which is why several Nuremberg craftsmen were already producing table clocks by the early 1500s. What nobody had managed was to make one small enough to carry on the body.
The obstacle was power. Every existing clock in Europe ran on hanging weights — iron or lead suspended by cords, their slow descent converted into the tick of an escapement. Take away gravity, and the clock stops. The solution was a coiled steel mainspring, wound tight, that released its energy through a gear train — and crucially, a mainspring was unaffected by movement or tilting the way a hanging weight was, which is what made a clock wearable at all (Seiko Museum). Henlein miniaturized the whole system to fit inside a gilded copper sphere the size of a small apple. Johannes Cochläus, a scholar who knew him personally, wrote in 1511 that Henlein made devices “from only a little bit of iron… [that] show and chime the hours for forty hours” (Wikipedia).
There is a watch, still in private ownership, that may be the oldest example surviving. Called the Watch 1505 — or the Pomander Watch — it is a fire-gilded copper sphere 45 millimeters across and 38.5 grams. Inside the casing, metallurgical analysis and CT imaging have confirmed a date of around 1500. Beneath the gilding, an expert committee found the letters “MDV PHN” and microscopic “PH” patterns distributed across the components — Roman numerals for 1505, followed by the initials of Peter Henlein Nürnberg (Quill & Pad). He could not sign the object openly — guild rules barred him until he made master — so he worked his name into the metal in letters less than half a millimeter tall.
The city of Nuremberg’s treasury records show that on January 11, 1524, Henlein sold the city “a gilded pomander for all purposes with a clock-mechanism” for fifteen gulden. By mid-century, portable timepieces were fashionable accessories among wealthy Europeans. They acquired a nickname: Nuremberger Eierlein, “Nuremberg little eggs” — which was, in fact, a mishearing of Uhr, the German for clock, that a translator fixed in print in 1571 and the language never bothered to correct.
Before Henlein, time was a property of buildings. It lived in church towers and sundials, in monastery bells and market-square dial-faces. When you needed the hour, you found a wall and listened. His spring-driven pomander changed the equation: the hour became portable, personal, private. Early pocket watches lost minutes every day, and nobody minded much — the point was that you carried time rather than waiting for it to ring. Every watch made since, right down to the one in your pocket now, runs on the same stubborn premise.
